Bob And Mary In La Jolla

The easiest way to describe the economics of La Jolla is, it’s where Mitt Romney’s 11,000 square foot beach home (with car elevator) is located.

If Barbie and Ken were real people they’d live in La Jolla!

My friend Bob is vacationing with his wife Mary. They’re driving up the California Coast to Petaluma. It’s a spectacular trip Bob and I took in 1974.

Sunday night they were in La Jolla, just north of San Diego. We drove down for dinner.

First things first. On the way down the 5 we saw the biggest traffic jam I’ve ever seen. An accident closed the freeway just north of Camp Pendleton. There had to be 20 miles of traffic stopped dead in their tracks. It was mainly gone on our way home.

We drove in and found our way to the restaurant. It’s only a few blocks from the beach, but I found an on-street parking spot. My dad would be proud.

We brought Doppler and in true California fashion sat on the patio with no questions asked. Doppler is the perfect dinner guest.

Bob and Mary showed up a few minutes later.

Dinner at Piatti was very Italian and very good. We had good people watching from the corner of the patio.

After dinner we walked to the beach. The Sun was already down, but the western sky glowed. Families were on the beach finishing their Sunday outings. A fire ring was lit nearby. Aguy played guitar… because… California.

It’s easy to lose yourself in a place like La Jolla. It’s so pretty. It’s so accessible. It’s so expensive!

Good friends. Beautiful setting. Couldn’t be beat.

  1. My husband and I kayaked in La Jolla a few years ago. You are so right, it’s pretty, accessible and EXPENSIVE! We took a ride after our kayaking excursion to check out the homes and I can only imagine the income it would take to live there. Also, aside from Mitt, Dr. Seuss made his home in La Jolla as well.

  2. I spent some time there a while back. I said if I ever won the lottery, my winter home would be in La Jolla. It’s incredibly beautiful.

  3. I was in La Jolla in 2008…its a beautiful setting. It’s the perfect sized community that has the best of both larger and smaller communities.

The only issue I had back then (and the photos above with fires and jackets on refreshes my memory – lol)…is that it can be shockingly cool at night along the SOCAL coast – even in summer. Here in CT that is one thing I would miss if I moved away – those old fashioned summer nights when at 10:00 PM its breezy at 78 F and I can be in a tee-shirt and shorts – lol.
