Testing 1-2-3

When it comes to weather equipment for broadcast, I’ve always been a willing beta tester. Yes, it always leads to problems. It’s worth it.

By beta testing I end up having the ear of the coders. I have a say in the final product.

For the last week I’ve been running some fairly rough software in my TriCaster. I’m helping put the final touches on their Advanced Edition software. There are so many ways this software will make my life easier. It’s worth it to put up with a little discomfort now.

The software has been installed and pulled by me three times. The first few times merely installing it caused the entire system to crash. At the moment it’s serviceable with a few rough edges.

New software sometimes means new enhanced commands. Macros I used to run don’t anymore! I haven’t even gotten to playing with the new stuff.

The tricky part is threading the needle while using the gear on-air. We had some hairy moments just before the Nine O’clock News tonight. I’m not sure what was going on back at the station, but it’s likely our director, Michele, had her finger on the button ready to run my backup ‘safety’ weather.

Hopefully, in a week or two all the obvious bugs will be flushed from the software. We’ll settle back into a routine… until the next beta.
