A Good Time To Be A Geek

I remember the past, but am much happier here. If you can master the technology around you, this is a very good time to be a geek.

I just traded some texts with a friend. He was in a cab and complaining the driver was taking him the long way. He is 12 time zones away where English is seldom spoken. That’s approximately half way around the world.

This is what surprises me most about 2015, the ubiquity of free and instant communication with anyone, anywhere. Exactly how did we chat for free? Someone’s picking up the tab. This is really the biggest change technology has brought.

Phone calls were once expensive. Now I use an IP phone in my studio to hear what’s on-the-air at KMIR. It’s connected at least 20 hours a week. It’s free from Google.

I telecommute to work in Palm Desert from my home studio. They receive beautiful, crystal clear HD video. I pass 4.5Gb of data every hour my studio is sending. the data bill–under $100/month.

My friends who used to buy satellite time for newscasts will cry at how little you can spend now.

I remember the past, but am much happier here. If you can master the technology around you, this is a very good time to be a geek.
