On Working From Home

It would be foolhardy to hide something like this. People inevitably find out. They’ll feel cheated if they can’t trust you to be upfront. Viewers can tell who cares and who’s going through the motions.

IMG_20150625_022308I haven’t been to the KMIR studio since June. I’m ‘in’ Palm Springs on TV every night. We don’t talk about my location. It’s not hidden either.

I do all my forecasts on-the-air from my garage in Irvine. Best workplace ever! It’s on the other side of the wall from our kitchen.

It would be foolhardy to hide something like this. People inevitably find out. They’ll feel cheated if they can’t trust you to be upfront. Viewers can tell who cares and who’s going through the motions.

The delay is only .8 seconds. I chat with the anchors. If I didn’t tell you, you wouldn’t know.

Some telecommuters enjoy the ability to stay casual. My job’s a little different. It’s still nice to know I can go from shower to work in 25 minutes.

I haven’t put gas in my car in a few weeks.

IMG_20150625_022536Working at home keeps me out of office politics. I know less about who’s happy and unhappy or looking to make a move. My workday is generally uneventful and with fewer distractions, more productive.

On days Helaine goes out I do get lonely. Those are the days I’m more chatty with the directors while we do our pre-show checks.

I like being responsible for the equipment. There’s never a worry if my concerns are enough to warrant someone else’s actions. If somethings not right, it’s fixed or replaced. I’m the entire chain-of-command.

My camera never moves. The lighting never changes. No adapting necessary.

Having a switcher and being my own director is a little more difficult, but it gives me incredible abilities. I throw in a lot of quick visuals I couldn’t do under conventional conditions.

It works exactly as planned. How often do you get to say that?

  1. Sure wish I could see that working. You gave the website a while back–don’t think that I bookmarked it.
Less wear and tear on the car—for you, plus you don’t have to worry about detours, accidents etc. on the road. Those fires appear to be getting closer and closer to you folks–where was the one in San Diego that started from a small plane going down?–heard it on the news this evening. Also, how are thing going up where your daughter lives? If you do get those flooding rains, all H— will break loose in those canyons. It is never a pretty picture.
