I just watched a car chase on LA TV. It’s a sport out here.
We tuned in as the car was racing through Sherman Oaks, winding its way up-the-hill toward Mulholland.
This one ended with a truly spectacular crash. The perp’s car sideswiped another then slid on its side, sparks flying, for a few hundred feet.
A woman and child got out the passenger side. A man from the driver’s.
I couldn’t believe it. How could they subject a child to this? And how did they survive.
It was at this point I felt unclean. What the hell am I doing? Why am I watching?
Most LA chases end with the cops getting the bad guys. But people are watching for something morbidly spectacular. That’s what we got tonight.
I wish I could say I won’t watch again, but I will. I wish I better understood why.
It’s what I call train wreck syndrome. Something catches your interest and you just can’t stop watching.
I wonder what percentage of viewers watched the OJ police pursuit?
