The Pope Of Many Names

One of the more interesting parts of the visit was his introduction to the House of Representatives. It’s done by the US House sergeant-at-arms. He’s the guy who opens the door, walks in the chamber and shouts, “Mr. Speaker, the President of the United States,” at the State of the Union.

pope-kisses boy-cerebral-palseyI have thoroughly enjoyed the Pope’s visit to America. It’s strange, because religion is not a major part of my life. Beyond that, I’m Jewish. We’re what’s left after the project forked¹.

He has many choices of what to say with the pope.

Pope Francis, Papa, Vicar of Christ, Vicar of Peter, Holy Father, Bishop of Rome, Servant of the servants of God, Supreme Pastor, His Holiness, The Rock, Supreme Pontiff, Father of Kings, Governor of the World, Successor of St. Peter, Shepherd of the Universal Church.

Pope or pope?

  1. What I remember is that he announced, “The Papal Nuncio of the Holy See” and I’m willing to bet that I capitalized it properly…

  2. I grew up having Pope Pius. He lived in a far off land (Italy) and gave the “marching orders” so to speak, to all the priests in the land. Since we didn’t have TV back then, I only saw pictures of him in Catholic magazines. He was someone to be ‘feared’. Watching this special pope for the past week + Cuba, and his total love of all people, his gentleness, and ability to speak from his heart–was indeed a very special time–our land needed this visit–as did the RC church as a whole.
To answer your question I believe Pope is capitalized when it is used as a title, like we capitalize Mr. or Rev., or Rabbi. And I guess when in your sample sentence. I’ll have to notice –next time the announcement is the President of the United States.
This visit was such a joy because this pope is interested in all peoples, loves his God, and the place we call Earth. He is more interested in our morality, and is trying to right some of the wrongs inflicted on catholics throughout the world, over the last century +. PS—now I’m in withdrawal! Nothing interesting on TV!
