What My Time Lapse Says About The Atmosphere

I like this particular movie because what looks flat in real time is very complex when sped up. It’s one of the reasons weather modeling so often fails. We can’t model this complexity.

We look at the sky in human time. It looks still.

The sky actually operates on its own slower clock. It is best seen in time lapse.

Even the best computer models only resolve to a few kilometers. What you’re seeing is going on in feet and inches. It’s turbulent up there.

The atmosphere is the most complex thing on Earth.

  1. I can vouch for that……it was turbulent as heck flying Eastbound over the Sierra’s yesterday. Fortunately, due to our speed, and ability to climb, we were able to outfly that parcel of turbulence.

  2. Great video, and now that song is stuck in my head. I’ll be singing I’ll Be There all afternoon, much to the consternation of my office.
