Bad Decisions 101

There was once an unwritten rule in TV news. Don’t do stories about school bomb threats. Mentioning them only encourages more.

HollywoodHighSchoolHollywood High and the entire LA Unified School District was closed today. No classes. Credible threat, they said. Hoax, they said later.

There was once an unwritten rule in TV news. Don’t do stories about school bomb threats. Mentioning them only encourages more.

That was before the Internet. Now TV news competes with your neighbor on Facebook. You snooze, you lose. Rumors are us!

Today’s closure is part of our new panicky mindset. Is this really how we want to live?

There is no way to protect against every conceivable threat. We’re foolish when we make believe there is.

Helaine and I flew to Vegas last week. I was “TSA Pre” on the way down, not back. Did they fear I was radicalized between Wednesday and Saturday? If they weren’t going to trust me shouldn’t that have been on the first flight?

The TSA checks me out every time I fly. I’ve been flying over forty years. Can’t they figure it out?

More data… More snooping isn’t going to make us safer. There’s already too much to filter through. We need more concentrated snooping. That is harder to do.

I was with everyone who said we’d be wrong to change after 9/11. And yet we seem ready to let ISIS (or any radical group) force us to abandon our principles without firing a shot. That’s really sad.

Shame on us.

  1. I’ve said the same thing about the school shootings. 3 years since Sandy Hook, and we still hear about it just about daily. If the media would SHUT UP and not give these idiots the attention they want, there’d be a lot less shootings.
