The Snow’s Almost Outta Here

Snowfall Nebraska 2-2-16

The snow is pulling out of Nebraska. What a day! 200 miles of Interstate 80 is closed. Need I say more?

No forecast is ever 100% spot on, but this was reasonably close. Phew. I’m like this every storm.

Nebraskan’s had a one week heads up. Admittedly, my accumulation numbers went up and down a few inches during the week. The last two or three days have been very close.

The storm wasn’t just snow, it was snow and ferocious wind. A peak gust of 50 mph was recorded at Norfolk’s airport. Visibilities often sank close to zero. That too was well forecast with plenty of lead.

Now comes the disagreement on when the storm is over. The National Weather Service is keeping its Blizzard Warning up. It expires at 4:00 AM. There will be no snow falling from the sky. The warning is for blowing and drifting snow sometimes called a ‘ground blizzard.’

Whatever it is, tonight won’t be as bad as today. I’d rather leave Blizzard Warning on its pedestal.

This snowstorm begins the pothole season in Nebraska. It begins Thursday to be specific. We’ll have 35º and sunshine during the day, then 10º or so overnight. Streets will be slushy.

Snow thaws, melts into cracks, freezes and expands. Cars and trucks do the rest. Potholes galore!

The people in Nebraska don’t know me yet. I’d like them to think of me as a fun guy who knows when to be serious and who cares about them and their weather. I’d like to think today was a step in that direction.

Over 30 years and I still love what I do.

  1. If you ask me Geoff…winter is one big pain in the you know what. Poor folks in Nebraska, I hope I-80 opens soon again.

I saw this (below)…how will this impact your area. It seems the cold is everywhere this winter (other than Florida of course). I wish March 20th would just get here now!
