How Goes The Recuperation?

Let me tell you what I just told Helaine. Things are moving along nicely. No one knows what recuperation should be. This one seems cautiously smooth and fast.

I read the stories. Some Whipple grads take weeks or months to get where I am. I would think I’m three or four days ahead of schedule after a week. My goal of returning to work Monday seems reachable.

I am in pain. Don’t misunderstand. It hurts!

If I didn’t know what it was I’d be seeing the doctor to find out! It is constant 24/7.

Sixteen staples hold my tummy together. There are dozens more stitches buried within. ‘Nuff said.

This is not my first trip to the chronic pain rodeo. It hurts whether you do stuff or not, so I do stuff. The more I move, prevailing wisdom says, the faster I heal. I seem to be a good healer.

It is luck. No skill involved.

No pain meds either.

We went to Costco today. I got to drive a motorized shopping cart.

Dream. Come. True.

Sushi for dinner with Stef and Helaine. And then the debate.

At least I’m getting better.

  1. Geoff, you look absolutely fantastic! I cannot believe you just had major surgery. You must have La Niña on your shoulder, helping out!

  2. Geoff-

The fact that the coconut water did not come pouring out from six different directions after you swallowed (like a Bugs Bunny cartoon) is testament to the fact that your doctors knew what they were doing!

  3. Meh, I’m not a fan of cocoanut water either. Cocoanut milk, however, is OK, and it seems to work ok as a substitute in baking some things…

Glad to see your sense of humor survived the experience. You had us worried with the longish silence…

  4. You look mahvelous!
If you’re going to be in some pain regardless, I always think it’s best to move around if allowed rather than wallow in self-pity! Just don’t overdo it!

  5. Geoff,

Very pleased that your recovery is proceeding in a positive manner.
    You are quite a “trouper”!
Your words and attitude are very commendable and inspiring.

Thanks for keeping us, your friends and viewers up to speed!

    Best regards,

  8. Wow I can’t believe you are out shopping! Glad to see you doing so well and pray that you continue with the healing. Don’t overdo it! I think you are too ornery to let this get you down! Haha!

  9. God bless you Geoff….thinking of you and I hope you
are pain free and recovering very soon! Positive thoughts
    sent to you and Helaine.

  10. Thanks for the update. I’ve been hoping we would get one. Ditto to all of the above. You seem headed in a good direction.

  11. I also found that moving around was the best medicine after my back surgeries…..yes I hurt…But as the joke goes ” doc it hurts when I do this,…doc says then don’t do that ” You look great Geoff!!!

  12. Geoff, it’s so good to see a new entry to your blog. I’ve been keeping an eye out – hoping to see you’d written something since the surgery. Rachel Frank (on her Facebook page) shared with us a post-surgical update from Elaine – but it’s good to hear from YOU. Keep on keepin’ on. <3

  13. Connecticut is happy to see you are “up and at ’em”. Just don’t do too much too soon.Your great attitude will be a big help in your recovery.

  14. Geoff…just checked back with fingers crossed and…

    WOW!!!! WOW!!! LOOK AT YOU!!!!!

Mazel Tov, Best of Health to you, you are an inspiration to others who could benefit from Whipple! Your young age (don’t deny this one, Geoff), excellent overall health, and solid pre-surgery homework are rewarding you with your remarkable rebound! –MLF
