“I thought you might like to see an iceberg,” she said. And with that she turned the camera to reveal a medium size iceberg floating gently between the ship and shore. I was watching it live.

I was doing a little work this evening when Skype began to warble. It was my friends on their cruise to Antarctica. They’re just off Gold Harbour on South Georgia Island. We video chatted. What’s 7,757 miles between friends!

The connection was pixelated and a little ratty but perfectly acceptable considering they were very far from anything resembling civilization! From South Georgia geostationary satellites are close to the horizon. It’s tough to track them from a bobbing ship.

Through their window and over the balcony I could see the snow covered mountains which mark South Georgia’s interior. This time of year as melting gets underway an island like this is loaded with waterfalls. I can only imagine.

We said our goodbyes. The connection was getting worse.

Five minutes later they called back.

“I thought you might like to see an iceberg,” she said.

And with that she turned the camera to reveal a medium size iceberg floating gently between the ship and shore. I was watching it live.

Damn, I love living in the future!
