My Chinese Internet Eyeglasses Have Arrived

This time I decided to try and get my glasses over the Internet from Zenni, which manufactures the lenses in China, bulk ships them to California then repackaged and FedEx’ed mine from there. I paid extra for that. I was desperate.

The new ones are on the left. I should have let you guess.

A few weeks ago I broke my glasses. No problem. I have a backup. But it was old and the prescription has changed.

This time I decided to try and get my glasses over the Internet from Zenni, which manufactures the lenses in China, bulk ships them to California then repackaged and FedEx’ed mine from there. I paid extra for that. I was desperate.

There was one advantage I had over most. I have my prescription. I see an ophthalmologist on a regular basis and asked for one a few months ago. I did measure (or more accurately Helaine measured) my pupillary distance.

I ordered on the 4th and they arrived today, the 11th.

They come with a plastic case you won’t want to use.

Right off the bat I see better. I see clearer. Everything is a little brighter. I’m guessing that’s because these glasses have a thinner lens and a 1.67 index rating. The focus is good for computing and reading.

I got all the coatings but am a little disappointed in the anti-glare, sort of important in my work. It is however better than the glasses it replaces, so maybe I’m too critical.

They look almost exactly like my old glasses, which is the point. This frame seems a little heavier, but with lighter lenses it’s about the same. On the website I found little distinction between most frames. This is one part of online where you sacrifice.

Total price including express shipping and a 15% discount (easily found) $153. I think that’s pretty good for good progressives.

  1. “Looks” a good deal. You sound well. That makes me happy but still miss you back east on TV. Would be great if you could fill in again. Hint, hint.

  2. I’ve had two good experiences with “39 dollar glasses .com” … once for progressives (spent $101 total) and once for just-distance sunglasses (spent $39 total). Both are just spares/backups but I’m now confident enough that I’ll use them for my next “primary” Rx purchase for sure. I can’t seem to get out of a brick-n-mortar eyeglass store for under $350 so I’m determined to avoid it going forward!

  3. Wow, that IS a good price for progressive! My mother just paid $453 for some
that were SUPPOSEDLY on sale. She is very stubborn though about where she
    gets them…..sigh…..she’s 98 years old!

  4. I really like Zenni. I’ve tried the $6.95 frames with single lenses and they are great back up glasses ! Measuring is key, but otherwise I’ve had no issues. Once I messed up my hubs TX and put it in backwards and they made it right. Not as much fun as trying on frames in a store but my bankroll isn’t what it used to be and it’s perfect for oldies like hubs and me!-Evi

  5. I just sent my Zenni order back to tweak. I, too, had a prescription and am a Pharmacist, so I could actually read it. Alas, my progressives arrived with with the upper section of my right lens completely out of focus. Also, I have to drop my chin more than I like when looking at the computer. I am waiting for them to return. The price was right and I liked the case. My husband and son were pleased with their glasses, also from Zenni. Glad you liked yours. Miss you.

  6. After trying 39 glasses, I gave Zenni a shot. I like the overall quality of Zenni more. The lens quality was higher. My only complaint so far is the anti reflective coating tends to get dirty quick, and after 2 months, I am finding swirl scratches in the lenses ( I suspect they don’t do a final polish with abrasives, instead using a optical polish that cleans away).
