Film Racing

The problem was Harvey didn’t know how to edit! “I didn’t even know what I didn’t even know,” he said that day.

Back in 2005 I got a group of friends together to make a movie. I’m ready to do it again! The trigger for this was an email I received earlier today.

The 24 Hour Film Race 2011 is an international competition that challenges filmmakers everywhere to create short films (4 minutes max.) in just 24 hours. The 2011 competition is scheduled to kick off at 10PM EST on Friday, April 29th. Filmmakers are e-mailed a Theme (ex. Revenge, Spare Change, A Trade, etc…) and Surprise Elements (ex. A Prop and/or Action) which must be included in the film. Filmmakers have until 9:59PM EST on Saturday, April 30th to write, shoot, and edit an original short film and upload the finished film on filmracing.com

Everything has to be done “day of.” The theme and surprise elements are there to make sure of that!

It is doable, but not easy. Here’s our 2005 movie made with the best intentions. It wasn’t particularly good, but it was well worth doing.

Among my favorite memories from the last movie race was my friend Harvey. He asked to be our editor and came with a very nice Mac laptop with Final Cut Pro. The problem was Harvey didn’t know how to edit!

“I didn’t even know what I didn’t even know,” he later said.

Things are different now. Harvey has learned to edit and even put together some very impressive presentations on his own. I hope he’ll be involved in the editing again.

Things have changed greatly in the last six years. The last movie was pre-iPhone and before the advent of DSLRs that shoot HD video. It’s now possible to easily have multi camera shoots with nothing more than a few cellphones. Crazy!

This competition takes place in April which presents another obstacle. I have no idea where I’ll be in April or what I’ll be doing!

Hopefully I’ll be making a movie.
