My Longest Friendship

Within a few seconds I had an image of his street… then his house… and windows. God, technology is good.

I spoke to Dennis Westler last night. He was my next door neighbor. The Foxes were 5E. The Westlers were 5F.

Our families moved into their tiny apartments in 1953. Jeez… that’s a long time ago. The apartments shared a wall. Helaine and I live farther from Stef than I lived from Dennis!

I know Dennis longer than I know anyone else outside my family. I haven’t seen him for 25 years.

We talked well over an hour. In fact we talked until Dennis’ cellphone battery gave out!

He lives in the Castro District in San Fransisco. He’s been in the Bay Area for a long time.

“What’s your address,” I asked?

Within a few seconds I had an image of his street… then his house… and windows. God, technology is good.

“Are those fluorescent bulbs in the upstairs left window?”

Dennis makes sure the things people grow grow healthily. He is considered an expert in orchids–Dr. Orchid.

He’ll be back east sometime this summer or fall. I look forward to seeing him again.
