Doppler’s First Appearance On TV

Doppler has just the right disposition for television. She is calm. She is content. She is quiet. She doesn’t shed!

Stef asked if she could bring her friend Jackie to the station tonight. She wanted to bring Doppler too. Doppler’s first TV appearance.

I have some video at the bottom of this entry. How it got here is a story of how TV’s changed.

When I first got into TV we were just making the transition from film to videocassettes. Everything was recorded on physical media–tape.

Today we use no videotape at all! As it aired our newscast was being digitized on a server farm in a locked and hermetically sealed room just behind our control room.

While the newscast was still on I walked to my desk, opened a web browser and called up a small clip editor. I set the in-and-out points, hit a button and watched as the video was deposited on my desktop. Then I dragged the files to a flash drive I carry with my keys.

For some reason the video won’t play on my PC at home, but YouTube found it acceptable so I uploaded it there.

Now the video is universally available! That’s crazy. It exists in the cloud.

The cost of entry used to prohibit anyone but a large corporation from owning a video production facility. Nowadays you can do most of it on your phone!

Doppler And Bentley: Siblings Reunited (photos)

When I first met Bentley and Doppler at the pound in Wallingford Doppler had her teeth around Bentley’s neck. Old habits die hard! They picked up right where they left off.

Cheryl and Steve have things to do today. They’ll be out of the house too long to leave Bentley. That’s why he’s here today sharing quality time with Doppler, his sister.

It’s playful fighting. There are snarls and barks, but never a sign either is actually hurting the other.

The Foxes can attest to the fact this kind of play tires dogs out. They both napped nicely for much of the late morning.

The Secret To My Doppler Photos

Helaine and I were sitting watching football tonight. Doppler was next to me on the sofa. “That’s what you wanted,” Helaine began, “a stuffed animal.”

Correct.

Doppler’s laid back disposition is fine with me. The dog and we are still being molded by each other.

There are lots of Doppler photos on the blog. I like photography and especially dog photography.

Dogs look much more expressive if you shoot them correctly.

The photos in this entry were shot on my cellphone. Technique is more important than equipment.

Here’s the most important thing to remember. You’ve got to get down!

Shooting Doppler on the sofa is my little height crutch. Most times I just lie on the floor to get my shot. The camera is always low.

Doppler Gets Cuter

I think she wants to be part of everything!

Christmas photos were being taken at work this afternoon. I forgot my Santa hat! No problem. Helaine realized and called me before I’d driven off our block!

I turned around and pulled in the driveway. Helaine was waiting on the steps. Doppler was waiting too.

I think she wants to be part of everything!

What Obsessive Dog Owners Do

She howled. She barked. We heard her paws scratching the door to the garage. All this from a dog who’s usually silent.

Helaine and I went out to dinner tonight. We didn’t go far, Sergios down on Whitney. That meant leaving Doppler home.

We’ve decided Doppler will be a ‘free range puppy.’ She seems very trustworthy and has shown no desire to be destructive. She’s licky, not chewy!

In order to keep tabs I went online and bought a FOSCAM wireless network camera. It’s got IR LEDs for night viewing and can be panned and tilted directly from my smartphone. It was easy for me to configure though you might need the help of your favorite nerd.

There’s sound too. At the moment I’m not sure that’s a good thing.

As we ate dinner we watched Doppler walking back and forth through the family room and into the mud room. She howled. She barked. We heard her paws scratching the door to the garage. All this from a dog who’s usually silent.

This is not the right way to have a relaxing dinner!

We weren’t gone an hour. I’m not sure she ever relaxed.

We can’t be tethered to the house. Doppler is going to have to understand from time-to-time she’ll be on her own and we’ll be back.

She’ll learn.

Doppler: Will Sit For Treats!

The idea was to train Doppler when she came to live with us. So far the only thing she knows how to do is sit. It’s a good start.

By the way, she is about twenty times as active in this short clip as she is in ‘normal’ home life.

Doppler’s Vertical Leaping Ability Exposed!

We know Doppler has anti-gravity paws, but her leap onto Stef’s bed is awe inspiring!

Late Night With Doppler: Video

I’m not going to lie. When I write about Doppler my traffic goes up. Obviously this little doggie is popular. She’s asleep on an afghan on the sofa pressed up against me.

She’s feeling better now and I thought you might like to see some video.

Quick Doggie Update

I have a sweet dog laying on an afghan next to me on the sofa. The spring is back in her step. She has regained her puppy-like peppiness.

We’ll be watching the hardness of Doppler’s food for the next few days and of course she’ll continue to receive the antibiotic. We are happy to see the outward effects of having a tooth pulled are gone.

Good puppy.

Poor Doppler

Doppler doesn’t have the advantage of reading! She is dependent on us.

Poor Doppler. She only joined the Fox family a few weeks ago and we’ve already sent her to the vet to have a tooth removed. She’s on-the-mend now, but she was a sad panda yesterday.

I have had teeth pulled. When the dentist is done you’re sent home with a list of instructions. Doppler doesn’t have the advantage of reading! She is dependent on us.

Her food has quickly shifted from dry to moist. Her treats have gone from hard to soft. No stairs for Doppler! At the moment she’s getting chauffeur service between the first to second floors.

She was wobbling yesterday, but a little more sure footed today. Hopefully she’ll be back to her sweet self within the next few days.

What We’re Learning About Dog Adoption

With dogs Connecticut is to North Carolina as the US is to China. We are a net importer.

I wrote a dog rescuer in North Carolina last night. Her organization brings dogs up to Connecticut every month. The truth is if you search Petfinder.com most of the dogs listed for Connecticut aren’t actually here.

With dogs Connecticut is to North Carolina as the US is to China. We are a net importer.

The other thing I’ve learned is a dog’s listing is on Petfinder.com doesn’t mean it’s actually still available for adoption! Here’s part of an email I received this morning.

Abby Lynn has been spoken for by another family.

This all seems to be a labor of love by volunteers. They can be excused. Of course the problem is you can’t put out too many feelers at once and you don’t know which will actually get you the dog you want.

I wish the system was more efficient, but it’s not my call. The search continues.

The Foxes Want A Dog

We are looking for a puppy we can rescue. That’s not as easy as it sounds.

The Foxes want a dog. We’ve wanted a dog for a while, but our house has been in a state of disarray since January. That’s behind us. The time is right. I am posting this on my blog because one of you can probably help us.

Don’t do anything yet. Read on.

We are looking for a smallish dog–fifteen pounds full-grown sounds abut right. Size is important because at some point our dog will need to fit inside a bag under an airline seat.

We are looking for a dog that doesn’t need wide open spaces. We have wide open spaces. We just aren’t outdoorsy. A dog that craves lots of outdoor activity will be very disappointed with the Foxes. We don’t want to disappoint.

Our Westie Ivy was extremely calm. She was almost a still life. That would be nice, but we’re not sure there are any more Ivys. Calm is good, but a dog who likes to play with her toys will be welcomed (and showered in toys).

We are looking for a dog we can rescue, preferably up to a year old. That’s not as easy as it sounds. We have looked through adoption and shelter listings on numerous occasions and have come up empty. There are lots of big strong dogs begging for homes, but few small cuddly ones.

Our dog will be a member of the family. She’ll/he’ll be a constant companion. Her/his birthday will be celebrated. She/he will have a stocking hung for the holidays. She/he won’t eat table scraps, but if she/he needs home cooked food Helaine is ready.

So, what d’ya think? If you have any suggestions please comment here or send me an email.

I expect we’ll get more suggestions than we’ll be able to accommodate. Please don’t be offended if we can’t take your help.
