Childhood Memories… But Not My Childhood

I was not a David the Gnome fan. Sorry Ghost of Tom Bosley. Stef had a few “Wee Sing in Sillyville” VHS cassettes. A pox on your house too!

I spent some time on YouTube this weekend. I was going through kid’s shows. Nope, they weren’t the kid’s shows I watched growing up, but the ones I watched alongside Stef.

Yes, I had my favorites. There were dogs too!

I loved Sesame Street. Stef watched in the Gina era. Most of the other regulars had found a way to minimize their involvement by then. Gina seemed the all purpose go-to human in the late 80s/early 90s.

Stef was saturated with Sesame Street because of advice given us by a friend. He told he he and his wife made long VHS Sesame Street airchecks which they’d plunk in the VCR whenever they needed a break from parenting.

It worked for me.

We also spent a lot of time with Sharon, Lois and Bram. They helped Stef learn the world from A to Zed!

Sharon, Lois and Bram specialized in public domain kids songs and cheesy over-the-top, overacted skits.

The show featured Eric Nagler. We don’t know anything about Eric, except that he got screwed in the billing!

Sharon, Lois and Bram are best known for their rendition of Skinamarinky Dinky Dink which ended every show.

In spite of my protestations the show was sweet and it was obvious S, L & B understood their obligation to kids.

My favorite show for Stef was Eureeka’s Castle. Wikipedia says “The show follows various puppet characters (in the style of Sesame Street), including Eureeka, a sorceress in training. She and her friends live in a wind-up castle music box owned by a friendly giant.”

Maybe. I’ve forgotten the details. All I remember is the characters were warm and friendly and flawed, as real people are flawed.

There’s a lot of cool stuff on YouTube. Little is cooler than this.
