We’re The Dogsitters (With Photos)

Cheryl and Steve had plans this afternoon. Unfortunately, humans only!

Bentley’s loss is our gain. We’re the dogsitters!

My first remembrance of Bentley and Doppler was at the Wallingford Animal Shelter. They were in the midst of some sort of family feud. Bentley was the aggressor, which seemed strange because Doppler was much larger and more powerful.

They had about 30 seconds of that today, then settled down. At the moment they’re both on the sofa taking it easy.

I love these family reunions.

Doppler And Bentley Have A Playdate

My first sighting of the two of them was at the Wallingford Animal Shelter. They were on the floor yelping and wrestling. Mouths were open. Teeth were revealed. Neither applied enough force to hurt the other.

It’s playdate time at the Fox house! Cheryl and Steve brought Bentley to visit while they run some errands.

Bentley was found and adopted by Cheryl and Steve the same time we adopted Doppler. They were abandoned together and purposely trapped in a baseball dugout. Bentley is Doppler’s brother or father–we can’t be sure.

Back at the shelter Bentley was tiny–around five pounds. Doppler was the obvious alpha. Now Bentley’s a bigger boy. Deciding which dog dominates is much more difficult.

They still go at each other, but after fifteen minutes both were exhausted and laid down.

It’s obvious Doppler and Bentley still recognize each other instantly. Their action around each other is very different than their reaction to other dogs.

It’s always good to have a family reunion.

When I first met Bentley and Doppler at the pound in Wallingford Doppler had her teeth around Bentley’s neck. Old habits die hard! They picked up right where they left off.

Cheryl and Steve have things to do today. They’ll be out of the house too long to leave Bentley. That’s why he’s here today sharing quality time with Doppler, his sister.

It’s playful fighting. There are snarls and barks, but never a sign either is actually hurting the other.

The Foxes can attest to the fact this kind of play tires dogs out. They both napped nicely for much of the late morning.

The Best News About Doppler

The truth is local shelters have lots of dogs who would love to come home with you. Not every dog is appropriate for every family, but it’s worth looking.

If you’re just joining us Helaine and I are adopting a dog. We are grateful to the folks from the ‘pound’ in Wallingford who found Charlotte and her brother Wilbur abandoned in a baseball dugout. The entrance to the dugout was blocked to keep them from getting free. It’s a pretty awful story.

I haven’t seen the pictures taken when the two pups arrived at the shelter, but I’m told they’re heartbreaking. That’s all behind them now.

Friday Charlotte becomes Doppler and joins the Fox family. But what about Wilbur?

I just got the good news that our friends Steve and Cheryl are adopting Wilbur who will henceforth be known as Bentley! How cool is that?

With Bentley and Doppler so close they’ll be able to get together for playdates and the occasional sleepover.

Bentley joins his new family Friday as well.

We think these dogs are around a year old, but aren’t sure. Originally Helaine suggested we celebrate Doppler’s birthday November 29. She’d done the research and found that’s Christian Doppler‘s birthday.

Later this afternoon Stef suggested we go with the day Doppler joins us. Perfect. From now on Doppler’s birthday is November 18! Cheryl told me it will be Bentley’s too.

I spoke to Cheryl this evening as she was buying supplies at Petco. She was excited… elated. She told me when she mentioned adoption the Petco associate gave her a coupon book with discounts for the things she’s definitely buying today.

I am told all you have to do is ask to get one. Way to go Petco.

Some people are surprised we were able to get such a really sweet dog locally at the animal shelter. I am one of them!

We are indebted to the folks in Wallingford who saw the inner beauty in these two scruffy mutts and treated them with love and respect until they found homes.

More to come.
