What I Learned Today About NASCAR

Pairs? That seemed wrong, but as I looked at the TV the entire field was made up of two car trains!

“It’s like watching the Long Island Expressway!” Those words from my sister, Trudi. She just found out I watched the Daytona 500 on Fox this afternoon. She was not impressed.

My viewing came about in an unusual way. I saw my friend Steve this afternoon. He is a gearhead and race fan. His Sunday was planned around the 2&#189 mile Daytona oval.

He wasn’t expecting a good race. The track’s been repaved. The cars would be driving in pairs.

Pairs? That seemed wrong, but as I looked at the TV the entire field was made up of two car trains! They were close, very close. Often they were a too close! A little misplaced bump could end your day… and often did.

Steve went on to explain how the track and cars conspired to force the drivers to take this tact. Drive alone and you’ll slow down.

Sure enough as he explained I watched cars on the TV change position slightly. All of a sudden a car that had been part of a couplet was left alone. He slowed down!

I know so little about racing, but as I watched I realized this wasn’t about which car was fastest. It was strategy and teamwork and incredibly sharp reflexes.

I continued watching with Helaine when I came home. We watched a few wrecks and marveled at the drivers who managed to escape with their cars and themselves unscathed. It looked like they were dodging bullets.

NASCAR has benefited greatly from advances in TV technology. There is no camera angle uncovered. Beyond that the integration of data into the pictures makes the whole thing look as high tech as it obviously is.

Like the NFL NASCAR now seems better suited to be watched on the tube than from the stands.

Today’s Daytona was won by Trevor Bayne, a 20 year old rookie driver making only his second big time start. Until an hour ago he was an unknown. TrevorBayne.com features an image and the words, “Official Site Coming Soon.” I’ll bet it is. Real soon!

There are parts of NASCAR that do bug me. There’s the total in-your-face commercialism right down to the soft drink being sipped as drivers are interviewed. I’d feel better if they backed off a little there.

Mostly I was impressed with what I saw. I’m not ready to follow Steve and block out a Sunday, but I’ll be back.

Freezecam Debuts

We’re watching ‘the’ game on TV – New England vs. Indianapolis on CBS. So far, this battle of undefeated teams, both led by charismatic quarterbacks, is everything promised.

CBS added a new feature to today’s coverage – FreezeCam. Remember when two words actually had a space between them?

I’ve tried to find as much info as I could, but there’s really not much available.

FreezeCam manipulates a high resolution, wide angle image of the field. There are enough pixels to allow zooming into small areas without the image getting ratty. It looks spectacular, though it’s probably not as amazing as it seems. Even in high definition, a television screen has significantly less resolution than a cheap digital camera.

Still, this is a major breakthrough, allowing a view of quick events happening away from the action where a camera would not normally be looking.

FreezeCam comes from Sportvision, the company responsible for many of the best sports video innovations. They provide the virtual 1st down line in football games, car tracking in NASCAR and pitc trajectory in Major League Baseball games.

I think they also provide the technology for the virtual ads behind home plate you see during baseball games. I’m considering giving them a pass on that, all things considered.

These are my type of geeks!

I’ve only seen Freezecam used a few times so far, to isolate a runner’s feet in possible out-of-bounds plays. Very impressive. It’s a gadget with a real purpose and value.

Adventures in Spam

I swear by Popfile to rid my inbox of spam – but it’s failing me now as spammers are getting more crafty. Within the past few weeks, messages that look very ‘spammy’ to the naked eye have been buzzing through Popfile. It was easy to figure out how.

Popfile compiles a ‘corpus’, a list of words that normally do or don’t appear in my emails. Spammy words are likely to get an otherwise nice mail kicked out.

These new emails take a paragraph or two of text (it looks like AP wire copy or something similar) and inserts it in the message. The text is so long, it overwhelms the spam content.

The really sneaky part is how this long text is displayed. Unlike the ad copy, these innocuous words are displayed in the smallest possible size. It is so small that the letters aren’t even formed. It’s just a blur of small smudges. I had to copy it into a text editor to see what was really going on.

It’s my guess that Popfile will be strengthened to fight this new scourge. And the spammers will come up with something else. It seems to be a never ending saga.

Here’s the part that I totally don’t understand. Hasn’t everyone who wants Cialis or Viagra, and is willing to blindly buy on the net, already gotten it? I’ve gotten thousands upon thousands of solicitations for this kind of drug. I understand why someone wouldn’t want to go to their doctor or pharmacist to explore this problem, but the numbers can’t be this great.

Then there’s the question who is going to ingest a substance that comes from a website which has to spell Viagra, V1@GR@ and falsifies its return address?

The products sold using spam have changed greatly over time. Bootleg software and prescription drugs seem to be the hot items at the moment. Many things I might have seen advertised a year or two ago are gone.

The quantity has also changed. Since January 6, 2004, 61% of my email has been spam (and that doesn’t count the untold thousands of messages I filter out before they get to my mailbox)

It all boggles the mind.
