What The Birds Left

I haven’t seen many nests in my life, but I have to tell you I am impressed. This is a technological marvel, beautifully shaped and structurally sound.

It was discovered yesterday on the rail at the edge of our deck. No more than 10 feet from the kitchen a momma bird built this beautiful nest. In order to show it I have pushed back some overhanging rhododendron bushes that obscured my view.

I haven’t seen many nests in my life, but I have to tell you I am impressed. This is a technological marvel, beautifully shaped and structurally sound. I don’t know what kind of bird built it–but I hope you do and will tell me.

There are no babies here. Hopefully they grew and flew. The other options are too gruesome to consider.

I wish I could have seen the nursery in action. I’m glad they chose my house as their house.

  1. Although I’m no expert, we had a similar nest in our bushes last year and it was Robin’s. I couldn’t get over how perfectly round it was inside.

We currently have a nest with growing babies in our screened in porch, not sure what type they are. They come every year, and have 2 sets of babies..the first set leaves right around Memorial Day, the second set July 4th. It’s so fun to watch!

  2. We have four nests around the house. Two under the porch, another in a trees nearby, and two on some decorative wreaths on our front doors!

The two on the doors are house finches. They built both in the course of about a day.. What’s amazing is that they’ve been taking my Siberian Husky’s hair that we pluck outside (she’s blowing out her coat right now) and line their nests with it for warmth.

Nest #1 is already on their second round of babies.. These house finches go from egg to independent in just a few weeks. If only human growth patterns could be so quick. Nest #2’s bird decided to take flight inside our house the other day. Thankfully she’s now back in her own home.
