I drive down Tuttle Avenue on my way to work every afternoon. The view is what you think of when you think of rural New England. On the south side of the road is Sleeping Giant State Park. On the north side is Butterworth Farm.
Less than five minutes from our house and you’re in the country!
Often I see horses lazily grazing in Butterworth’s pastureland in front of a cluster of stables. Sometimes there are also small signs saying, “POLO 3 PM.” We’ve lived here for twenty one years, but until this year I’d never seen the signs. Until today I’d never been inside the gate.
The Giant Valley Polo Club has matches Sundays during the summer. If you’ve never seen polo think hockey, but on horseback. It’s a friendly co-ed game, but there’s always some aggression when people and horses are chasing a little white ball at full speed.
I ended up taking about 500 photos. Here are a few of my best.
