Cookie Diplomacy

We went through two large trays today. Everyone is happy. Everyone is smiling. Those who believe the line I was passing think they’re now taller.

I arrived my first day working at FoxCT/Hartford Courant with a double batch of Helaine’s homemade chocolate chip cookies. At the time it seemed the easiest way to get started on the right foot. It still does!

“Take these to work.” That was my introduction to today’s cookies from Helaine. “And don’t eat any.”

Right. That worked.

Forget I’m on a diet. Forget the torture of riding with them on the seat next to me. I was sent with the tools to win friends and influence people!

I could have left the cookies on a table somewhere. Newsrooms are full of people who will eat anything laid out before them.

“Do you think this pizza from last night is still good?” That might as well be our newsroom’s motto!

What I like to do is carry the cookies from desk-to-desk passing them out individually. I’m approaching a year here, but there are still people I don’t know. Cookies are the perfect ice breaker.

I hit the main newsroom then walked the long corridor to Features, Sports, Editorial and the library. Each little oblast has its own feel. Features has the sunniest disposition.

This was the first time I hit Editorial and actually found people out of their individual offices. Chocolate chips bring people out of their shells.

Helaine’s chocolate chip cookies will make you believe nearly anything.

  1. I used to do the same thing at the school where I taught for many years. Every June I would bring huge platters of hand picked chocolate covered strawberries. Labor intensive, and gone in an instant…..but never forgotten! People still mention those strawberries years later.
