You’ve Seen The Weatherman Video, Right?

It’s pretty brutal. He’s obviously upset What he did was wrong. He probably regrets it now. Still wrong!

There’s a clip online showing KTLA’s Henry DeCarlo throwing a fit on-the-air (video at the bottom of this entry). It’s pretty brutal. He’s obviously upset What he did was wrong. He probably regrets it now. Still wrong!

I wasn’t there, but he explained his grief.

Often when the weather isn’t critical we are asked to do ‘soft’ live shots. He was doing one. But, if the producer doesn’t give you extra time it’s impossible to do the live shot and the weather.

It’s probable he hadn’t asked and wasn’t told. He was surprised when he got the first time cues.

However, if you’re in Market #2 you’re supposed to have enough restraint to hold it in until you’re through. No one needs to see the everyday conflict that’s part of every job.

In this regard I am not totally without sin. Gratefully it was pre-YouTube.

The Sad News About Dan Weston

While we were at Emerson, Dan’s dad was a dentist. Somehow Dan got hold of a medical catalog and ordered all sorts of exotic condoms. They weren’t for Dan nor me. Dan got a display case and sold them to fellow students!

It’s easier to find people with unusual names than common ones. If your name is Geoff Fox and Geoff is spelled with a “G” how tough can it be?

On the other hand it’s been tough to find my freshman college roommate, Dan Weston. There are too many Dan Weston’s (including that guy on TV for the Scooter Store). When last we spoke Dan was working for the PBS station in Hershey, PA. That was at least 30 years ago.

When I stumble across people I knew from college I ask about Dan. I just don’t stumble into that many people… and having been on the accelerated dismissal program at Emerson College that’s understandable.

“On a sadder note, I’m sorry to tell you, Dan passed away a few years ago. He was an engineer at KTLA TV here. I hadn’t seen him for a long time and only saw the notice in the Alumni magazine. He had some kind of cancer, I’m not sure. He was a sweet man.”

That came from Paul Greengross in Los Angeles who I ran into on Facebook. No one wants to get this news.

It Only Hurts When They Speak

From my Cousin Michael in sunny, crispy, Southern California:

According to Melissa, on KTLA radio this morning the announcer said that the switch to daylight savings time was good news regarding the Anaheim Hill fire, since there was now an extra hour of darkness when the fire was less likely to spead. Then the other announcers agreed. We live in a land of morons.

KTLA is a TV station. There’s no KTLA radio, so they’re off the hook.

That leaves us with three points here.

  1. The days of Edward R. Murrow are over
  2. Some listeners perceive news anchors as announcers – people who read and add no expertise to the situation.
  3. Some radio station needs a better name recognition campaign

As with Major League Baseball, is it possible we’ve expanded media to the point we’re thinned the herd a little too much?
