Striped Roads

If you live in Connecticut, maybe you’ve noticed this too. There are off-white stripes running down all our major roads. They started showing up a few months ago.

I captured them with the camera on my cellphone. Gimp was used to enhance the photo on the left, making the lines stand out a little more than they do in real life.

What the heck are they?

My suspicion is, they have something to do with the new way road salt is applied. Instead of dropping rock salt, brine is sprayed onto the road surfaces. And, if it works better, fine.

However, doesn’t this white stripe imply that concentrated chemistry is still sitting there? What are the long term implications for the roads? I’ve got no clue. Maybe nothing.

That white stripe must be something.

  1. today when i was on the wilbur cross i was behind the trucks spraying the roads . you are right . it is supposed to help keep the initial snow from accumulating. kind of like a head start for the d.o.t , i saw one truck today at the d.o.t. garage with the tank on the back . i assumed it was filling up again. when i first saw them several months ago my curiousity was peaked and did some research. if sure is better than getting the front of your car sandblasted when driving the after a snow fall
