The Moths

Are there places that are suffering a shortage of moths as they all fly to my door?

The driveway guys came Monday, filling the cracks in the blacktop and then sealing it. It’s now our no-fly zone. Our cars are parked on the street. There’s crime scene tape across the entrance to the driveway.

As I left my car tonight, I turned and reached into the center console for an LED flashlight. Maybe you’ve seen them? They’re extremely bright if you stare right at them, but not as bright when pointed at other objects.

I used the light to make my way up the grass and around the back of our house. The porch light was on and making quite an impression in the world of bugs. It was hosting a moth convention! Not some regional meet-up either. This was a well attended affair. It was impossible to move without having unwelcome moth contact.

Where do they come from? Are there places that are suffering a shortage of moths as they all fly to my door? Is my 60 watt light really that compelling?

I stopped a moment and pondered whether they’d follow me inside. There was nothing I could do and if I stayed outside, they’d surely fly up my nose or into my mouth. I quickly unlocked the door and moved in. The moths held fast by the light.
