Joe Furey’s Birthday

When he walked into the New England Air Museum (fabulous… what a gem) he thought he was going to give a speech to the Silver City Flying Club. Surprise!

My colleague meteorologist Joe Furey just turned fifty. As I remember fifty is a big deal. His depression will set in later, but right now it’s time to celebrate. To make that happen Joe’s wife planned and threw a surprise party. It wasn’t that easy!

Somehow Joe came across an invitation envelope with his wife’s handwriting. He got suspicious. That led to another, smaller party to throw Joe off the scent.

The party was great. Joe’s family was there along with a who’s who of Connecticut broadcasting and a sizable slice of the state’s meteorologists (Do you think Jeffrey Butler’s name came up?).

  1. I love the Weather Board dart board he was given! Sometimes, for us non-meteorologists, it seems like the weather forecast comes from throwing a dart at the dart board and making a guess at the day’s weather. Looks like it was a good time – great idea for a party venue!

  2. Happy Birthday to Joe! I was surprised, too. Last night, my husband, son and daughter in law surprised me with a birthday dinner at One the Waterfront Restaurant in New London for my 60th birthday. If you think 50 is tough, wait til you turn 60. Time flies…it won’t be long! My husband Joe said to tell you maybe we’ll see you at St. Joe’s Church in New London. We’ve seen you there before coming back from Communion. Wishing you all the best, Joe!!! Looks like it was a fun party!! Happy for you!!! Jane & Joe

  3. I loved working with Joe on Daybreak 1995 – 1997. I used to throw him off by tossing to his weather forecast by saying, “partly cloudy breezy and mild today Joe?”

That’s because Joe would always say that phrase when asked for a mic check off air — “partly cloudy, breezy and mild – increasing clouds tonight…”

What a class act. And like me, Joe married a news producer.

I miss those mornings with Joe & Mika.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOE!

  4. Just always have someone around who keeps track of your age, Joe! I am 58 and I forget how old I am and always have to ask a loved one when I go to the doc or somewhere. Fifty is fabulous! I love the postmenopausal surge of energy! Male menopause? Haha.

  5. Happy Birthday to Joe. Love the picture of you and Al. I have to say Geoff it looks like you have a great new home away from home.

    ENJOY.
