Not Everything Is Bad News

I’d like to think my mom just got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Whatever the reason it is not being questioned. We’ll take what we can get.

If you’ve read along for any length of time you know things have not been good for my mom. She has grown physically weak over the past few years and her Alzheimer’s has slowly progressed. I went down to Florida this spring when she was hospitalized then sent to rehab. Seeing my mother helpless and in a hospital bed was sobering.

I called my folks yesterday (as I do nearly every day). It was my mom who answered the phone. We had a real conversation, not the one or two word sentences she had regressed to.

My dad says she’s physically stronger too. They even went to dinner with Cousins Howie and Carol this past weekend!

I’d like to think my mom just got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Whatever the reason it is not being questioned. We’ll take what we can get.

Throughout this ordeal my dad has been a rock. He is typical of his generation in that he’s never had domestic responsibilities at home. That’s got to be a tough u-turn at 86!

He is slavishly devoted to my mom. There is no greater love.

Though my mom objected at first, they’ve brought in a wonderful woman, Lana, to prepare meals, assist my mom and do pretty much everything else. Godsend? Absolutely.

My niece Melissa announced her engagement last week. She and Mark will be getting married next summer in Milwaukee. I never thought my parents could attend. Now I’m not so sure.

Mom — whatever you’re doing, don’t stop.

  1. Wonderful to see that your Mom is doing better, Geoff. And your Dad is a rock and a saint of all saints. I pray that they WILL be able to attend that upcoming wedding.

I also hope you continue to get better. Please enjoy your weekend.

  2. Reading that did my heart good-thank you for sharing. Will keep your mom in my prayers that she’ll continue to do as well as she is now-and like you said you’ll take what you can get! My dear dad passed away this week-he was 92 and in a nursing home the past 2 years-we had some great days with him there and am grateful for those.

  3. Has her medication changed? It could be that something she was on was contributing to her problems. Too many doctors seem to just add a second medication to counteract side effects of the first, and then a third to counter the second – too many people being diagnosed with things like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s actually are just getting too many drugs.

  4. This is wonderful news. We take any positive things that we can. Being able to talk with her one the phone must have been a real boost to you, as well.

  5. So happy to hear, Geoff! I’ve been keeping your mom in my prayers over the months and this is wonderful! Hooray for Lana! I hope she spoils your parents rotten! Now… YOU get better. Miss you and the jib cam!!!! :0

  6. That’s wonderful news about your mom, Geoff! Enjoy every precious moment you can get with her and your dad.

  7. Truly great news! My folks are 91 and 82 and they are definitely from a different generation as you said. The best to your mom & dad..may she continue on the uphill curve. Now….YOU TOO! Get well – miss you on the news.

  8. Reading this made me happy. It was that way when my mom had cancer. Cherish the good days however many you have. 🙂

  9. So wonderful to hear that your Mom is experiencing some goodness. And that you are sharing in that with your Fathers love.

  10. Good for Mom. She seems to be a fighter and maybe she is going to be back to her old self for awhile. I’m happy for your family Geoff!
