If you’ve read along for any length of time you know things have not been good for my mom. She has grown physically weak over the past few years and her Alzheimer’s has slowly progressed. I went down to Florida this spring when she was hospitalized then sent to rehab. Seeing my mother helpless and in a hospital bed was sobering.
I called my folks yesterday (as I do nearly every day). It was my mom who answered the phone. We had a real conversation, not the one or two word sentences she had regressed to.
My dad says she’s physically stronger too. They even went to dinner with Cousins Howie and Carol this past weekend!
I’d like to think my mom just got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Whatever the reason it is not being questioned. We’ll take what we can get.
Throughout this ordeal my dad has been a rock. He is typical of his generation in that he’s never had domestic responsibilities at home. That’s got to be a tough u-turn at 86!
He is slavishly devoted to my mom. There is no greater love.
Though my mom objected at first, they’ve brought in a wonderful woman, Lana, to prepare meals, assist my mom and do pretty much everything else. Godsend? Absolutely.
My niece Melissa announced her engagement last week. She and Mark will be getting married next summer in Milwaukee. I never thought my parents could attend. Now I’m not so sure.
Mom — whatever you’re doing, don’t stop.
